Benefits Counseling

People with SMI have often suffered an arduous process of applying for and obtaining disability benefits. After this struggle to obtain benefits, it is understandable that many clients are concerned about the effects of work on their benefits (MacDonald-Wilson et al. 2003). Benefits counseling is aimed at helping clients understand the impact of returning to work on their benefits, including how much they can work before experiencing a reduction in their financial benefits and the potential loss of their health insurance. In addition, benefits counseling also focuses on educating clients about different incentive programs for people with disabilities returning to work. There is good evidence that clients with psychiatric disabilities who receive personalized counseling on the impact of earnings on their benefits accrue more earnings from employment (Tremblay et al. 2006).
